Motherboard vendors are preparing rigorously for catering to the market that the upcoming Intel Core i7 series processors generate. The processors are based on a new 1366-pin land grid array (LGA-1366) socket and would require you to purchase a compatible motherboard. ASUS had recently revealed that it would be in a position to make its LGA-1366 offerings available by launch-day of the Core i7. Gigabyte is getting ready with its high-end offering, the GA-X58-EXTREME, TweakTown caught more than just a glimpse of it.

GF9300T-A©01_580.jpg

After NVIDIA canned the Hybrid Power on MCP7A and pushed back the release date to August, we did not heard about any updates of the chipset from motherboard vendors for a long time. But today we received new date change from our sources. One of our sources mentions that MCP7A will hit the market in the late September.

But it seems MSI and ECS want to announce the board earlier than others. MSI has already sent out a press release of their nForce 730i/GeForce 9300 mobo P7NGM. Also ECS have updated their website for the newly released mobo GF9300T-A. If NVIDIA still keeps the date than we can get MCP7A in the end of this month.

The AM3 socket finally gives AMD Processors access to DDR3 memory. The only complication is that processors must feature DDR3 integrated memory controllers (IMC). Earlier roadmap slides had shown that the RD890 and RS880 along with SB800 would be the first platform with AM3 compliance. However, sources tell Expreview that AMD would not be ready with the chipsets by the time AM3 processors come out. Hence, AMD would be using the existing high-end duo of 790 FX and SB750 which would be re-launched in H1 2009 that support AM3 sockets. It is known that 790 FX supports HyperTransport 3.1 links that would offer processors system interconnect bandwidths of up to 6400 MT/s.

Another chipset that has been pushed to H1 2009 is the AMD 760G, which is a mainstream chipset with integrated graphics. It was expected that this would come out sometime in Q4 2008.

After yesterday's ASUS P6T Deluxe quick introduction, today is time for the heavy artilery to come by and stop at our front door. For sure ASUS, one of the biggest brands in the computer industry is not going to have only one or two motherboards to support Nehalem. Although the platform is not yet officially introduced, ASUS is ready with its Rampage II Extreme motherboard. As the name suggests this will be the enthusiast range of motherboard offerings support for LGA 1366 processors, triple-channel DDR3 memory and up to three PCI-Express x16 graphics cards. The new Republic of Gamers machinery might not have a fancy heat pipe cooling (it might not need one) but it has a few other tricks, such as a special VTT CPU power card that provides a 16-phase CPU and 3-phase memory power design. The board also features a number of strange buttons that will help experts overclock their hardware. The Rampage II Extreme also has six SATA 3.0 Gbps connectors, dual Gigabit Ethernets, FireWire, eSATA ports and most likely support for both ATI CrossFire X and NVIDIA triple SLI technology. Let the pictures finish this post:

Members of the XtremeSystems forums put up pictures of the Gigabyte's flagship X58 motherboard for the upcoming Core i7 processors, the EX58-Extreme with all its bells and whistles in place. Pictures of the board have surfaced several times now, older pictures were those of the EX58-DQ6 and DS4 models. What can be seen from the pictures, is a humongous chipset cooler that attaches itself to the main northbridge heatsink. The cooling continues over the board's VRM area and a large block covers the ICH10R southbridge. As the label screams, the motherboard is based on the Ultra Durable 3 PCB construction for best stability, heat dissipation and EMI control. Clearly, if you're going to be in the market for an enthusiast-grade motherboard, you're going to have a tough time...choosing. I'll leave you with the pictures.

:D:rolleyes:

The release version of the upcoming enthusiast-grade motherboard by MSI, based on the Intel X58 chipset for the upcoming Core i7 series processors, has been pictured at Coolaler. The close-up snaps show the motherboard to be packing quite some booty. It also shows that MSI hasn't used exorbitant cooling for the motherboard. There are two independent cooling units for the chipset and VRM areas. The board sports Dr-MOS component protection, and MSI seems to have spread the MOSFETs evenly, not to congest them at one place. The board provides a diagnostic display feature called D-LED 2, a small LED screen that shows diagnostic information, similar to the LCD poster that ASUS packs with some of its motherboards.

The board features an extensive set of expandability options. It features three PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slots that support both ATI CrossfireX and NVIDIA 3-way SLI for multi-GPU operations. It uses overclocker-friendly features on-board, including the peculiar turbo button. There are also 10 SATA ports, four of which, route to an external controller. All in all, the board looks promising. It isn't the highest MSI would be offering for the X58 plaform, with an even higher motherboard planned. For more pictures, browse through the thread

Starting with the Intel board, which is the cheapest of the three, it'll set you back £234.99 (€303/$413) which is a lot of cash to pay for a motherboard that doesn't even look like it's set to be one of the half decent boards out there. For starters it only has four memory slots, so you're limited to using three memory modules, so anyone considering going over 3GB will have to buy expensive 2GB DDR3 modules. The design of the board doesn't really appeal to us either for that matter and we've yet to see a confirmation of this board getting software SLI.

The Asus P6T Deluxe isn't that much more expensive at £252.61 (€326/$444) and it has a much better design with six memory slots, not to mention that it has a wide range of additional features and it's likely that Asus will have this board certified for software SLI. The OC Palm edition doesn't look like it'll be a huge seller in our books, as you're paying an almost £30 premium for an external LCD display which plugs into a USB port, that is meant to help you overclock the board. At £281.99 (€365/$496) this board is one of the most expensive out there.

Taken into consideration that the Asus Rampage II Extreme hasn't had its official price revealed as yet, that €400 price point mentioned doesn't seem all that far off now and we can't imagine who will be buying these motherboards. We've yet to see pricing from a wide range of other companies such as Gigabyte, MSI, Foxconn and ECS to mention a few, so there might still be room for some more affordable boards to turn up. It's also worth noting that OcUK isn't the cheapest places to get your motherboard, even in the UK.

It appears that the ASUS Rampage II Extreme motherboard we spotted last week has been an early sample that was designed for testing only. Today pictures of the retail version, the one that customers will see from now on appeared. The retail version of Rampage II Extreme will ship with a whole new cooling system, well known from various other Republic of Gamers mainboards, but different from the one we posted earlier. Aside from the cooling changes, the motherboard will have the same features as we reported here. I can only add the SupremeFX 7.1 sound blaster and the ASUS LED poster to our previous information of extraordinary features.

MSI EclipseThe upcoming Core i7 platform is looking to be rather expensive as pre-order prices for several X58 motherboards and Core i7 processors have begun appearing online. Last week we saw that MSI had three X58 motherboards planned for release and now early retail prices for these boards have appeared online.

According to Geizhals, the MSI X58 Platinum motherboard was listed online for just over $306 and the premium MSI Eclipse motherboard was listed for just over $413. The third MSI X58 motherboard is expected to be released at a later date, although its pricing is expected to be even higher as it seems to have been designed for extreme overclocking.

Prices for some Asus and Intel X58 motherboards have also appeared online, as discovered by Fudzilla. According to a listing that had since been taken down, an Intel X58 motherboard featuring only four memory slots had been listed for a price of $410. Since the Core i7 platform uses triple channel memory, it seems odd that an X58 motherboard would have four memory slots instead of three or six.

Also listed were two Asus motherboards; the Asus P6T Deluxe and the Asus P6T Deluxe "OC Palm Edition", priced at $441 and $492, respectively. The difference between the two boards is that the OC Palm Edition features an external LCD display that helps with system overclocking. More information about the Asus P6T Deluxe "OC Palm Edition", including photos, is available at Xtremesystems.

As for Intel Core i7 processors, a Canadian retailer had listed prices online for the upcoming processors. The Intel Core i7 920, 940 and 965 Exteme Edition processors had been listed for (CAD) $339.95, $649.95 and $1,099.95, respectively. The official prices for these processors when purchased in bulk from Intel are expected to be $284, $562 and $999, respectively, with an expected release date set for November.

Although this early look at the retail prices for X58 motherboards and processors may not be representative of final retail pricing, it does give the consumer an idea of what an Intel Core i7 system will cost. Along with the cost of triple channel DDR3 memory, it would seem like an Intel Core i7 system will be on the expensive side. Many consumers may find an Intel Core 2 Duo system to offer better value, at least for now.

SUPoX follows other tier-one manufacturers such as ASUS, MSI and Gigabyte, with its motherboard based on the Intel "Tylersburg" X58 chipset. The motherboard supports the upcoming Intel Core i7 series processors, with its LGA-1366 socket. Perhaps it sticks to older memory specifications from Intel, that stated the i7 processors to support DDR3-1066 memory standard. It features three long PCI-Express x16 slots. The two red ones do x16, x16 when two video cards are connected. When all three slots are populated, the PCI-Express lanes arrange as x16 (red), x8 (red 2), x8 (yellow).

Optionally, the package includes Q-Fi wireless network controller. The six SATA II ports routed to the ICH10R southbridge provide RAID functions. Additional controllers handle E-SATA and two internal ports, and the E-IDE port. As with most X58 motherboards, it features six DDR3 DIMM slots for tri-channel memory. There's no word out on its pricing and availability yet.
